SEWING KITS + PATTERNS
-
Working as the in-house graphic designer for Klum House Workshop, my role was to work closely with the editorial team to build out highly detailed and easy to follow instructions. I managed layout, illustration, editorial exchange, photography, and leather die design.

PRODUCT system
Making a heavy-duty bag isn’t an obvious process, and it differs in some ways to standard sewing patterns. At Klum House we designed a product system of a Kit, the Pattern and an Online Class. When purchased together it ensured the customer’s success in making the bag.
This system cut out all the difficulty in sourcing correct materials, and placed education as the highest priority. I designed for the visual learner, for the inexperienced and
for those who need a boost of confidence to make the bag.
PATTERN LINE
Working closely with the editorial team, I designed instructions for 8 bags which were sold online and in stores across the US. This included designing their packaging, their large format patterns, handouts and the main booklet.
-
We inspire the maker to consider why they are engaging in this process. From thinking deeply about the object, its use, its function, its history. As well as honoring the emotional journey of making, frustrations and wins!
-
The maker will be deeply aware what skills they are building. The instructions always put education first.
It’s about noticing and appreciating personal progress + transferable knowledge.
-
Makers will know the ‘whys” in the methods, they should feel informed of the nuance. The instructions build trust and faith in reaching the outcome + acknowledge the struggles as well as the achievements.
INSTRUCTIONS values
We developed a set of values that we felt helped to deliver strong education, and sought to embed throughout the instructions.
INSTRUCTIONS DESIGN - naito
I developed a brand style of technical illustration for the instructions booklet. I wanted clean line work, and use of 3D perspectives - much of bag making is learning to conceive the object “inside out, upside down, folded through, etc.”

LARGE FORMAT PATTERNS
Each sewing pattern required a large format layout of all the pattern pieces. This required super accurate sizing and placement with ergonomic nesting.
