KICKSTAND COMEDY
-
I worked closely with the founders of Kickstand to build a full re-brand and aesthetic strategy. We started with a brand audit, a logo re-design, swag for a Kickstarter campaign and then space design for the new club location.

BRANDING + STRATEGY
ABOUT
Kickstand Comedy is devoted to great stand up and improv in Portland Oregon, established in 2014. This project is a full re-brand of the organization, to level up whilst holding true to their punk DIY roots. This coincided with moving to a new larger space to grow their audience, support artists and establish a new era for the club.
LOGO
The pre-existing logo resembled a “flat tyre” inspired by the old comedy space residing in a bike shop. I edited this narrative out as conflating the story of the new space. The new logo was designed to be simple, bold, stamp-able, a little punk and with some reminiscence of the old logo (the lettering) to maintain continuity.
BRANDING
I start with a visual palette that establishes the vibe to act as a set of visual ingredients for the brand. I chose soft pastel colors to contrast heavy use of black since this is a nightlife venture. Two supporting fonts, mainly a manipulated Futura and Beatrice when glamor is required.
Textures included halftone patterns, zine like noise, chequerboards, and a bootstrap feel using duct tape, mylar, spray paint etc.
Hoody, T-shirt and long sleeve T-shirt designs for the Kickstarter campaign to fund the new space re-furbishment. These swag items were offered as a thank you for the donations. The campaign was very successful outstripping the original goal of $25,000 and finishing near the stretch goals of $34,000.
SWAG
Pins were offered part of the smaller Kickstarter donations.
PINS
Business cards that lead with the Kickstand “NOTACULT” (all one word!) tagline.
The website refreshed in brand colors, halftone textures and re-organized to simply navigation.

SHOW POSTERS
The posters for Improv shows and classes is where the punk irreverent attitude lives.
The space needed a large build out, including the outside, the window display, neon signs for the window, the tables, the walls, and the stage. I was asked to sketch ideas of what this could look like and incorporate the brand.
